X Marks the Scot Tartan Pin Cushion
Somewhere I heard that the leftovers from making a kilt could be used to make a pin cushion. Stuffing for it is the raveling from
various places in the kilt as it's assembled (from the waist edge after ripping to length, from the fringe, etc.).
Too much time has been spent hunting around for needles and pins in the bottom of the little plastic box where I keep my meager sewing kit.
So, I whipped out a little pin cushion from a piece of scrap and the raveling from XMTS Kilt #2. It
was easy to make. I folded the scrap in half, pinned it in place and sewed along a strip on each side. Once the sides were sewn, I turned
it inside-out.
I didn't have quite enough raveling so I unraveled another scrap piece to get enough. The ravelings got stuffed into the cushion and I folded
the end pieces into the cushion and pinned it closed. The tartan is sturdy enough that I couldn't get a very straight edge by simply pinning
so I basted the end shut and pulled the pins out. Then, with just the basting holding the end, I sewed it shut.
When I took Miss Elsie's kiltmaking workshop the first time, she had a pair of Gingher scissors
that I came to like a lot. After the class, I hunted about on the internets until I found an acceptable price. To distinguish hers from mine,
I made a simple flash from some scrap and sewed it to the lower handle. Mine are now unmistakably mine.
